Crystal, you have made Olivia such a compelling character. Even at her worst, there has always been something for me that makes her more than just the bitch, the bad girl, the spoiler. Watching Olivia finally find the love she deserves makes me so happy. The poor woman has been through SO MUCH! So much heartache, so much pain.
I know you know how much the current storyline with Olivia and Natalia means to so many people. On so many levels. Not the least of which is our hunger for a REAL LOVE STORY! There is no way to truly thank you for this. Thanks for 10 great years bringing us this great character. Of course we all hope for many more years to come....

I've always had a soft-spot for the anti-heroine character. The woman who often does the wrong thing for the right reason. Or even if for the wrong reason, it's due to a deep need and vunerability inside. Olivia, and the life you bring to her, is the very best example of that, and has been an absolute joy to watch.
It means more than you will ever know the openness you have shown to this fan base. It makes me proud to be a part of it. My hope is the cancellation is a temporary jump in the track, and we will be able to watch Olivia 'Freakin' Spencer continue beyond CBS. *fingers crossed*

I have never before felt compelled to write to a celebrity (unless Obama counts), until now. As a 43-year-old gay woman who's seen lesbian characters sensationalized in the media over the years to the point of utter ridiculousness, it has been a breath of fresh air watching you embrace a role that shows an honest (and decent and normal...ha ha) portrayal of two women falling in love. The nuances you bring to the character of Olivia are nothing short of brilliant. And girl, your eyes really should come with a warning label! In the words of Lady GaGa: "I am starstruck!"

Thank you for helping the world community turn the tide against hatred and bigotry. Watching the Otalia storyline unfold so organically and beautifully has given me renewed hope that more and more people will finally get that love is love, plain and simple, and that "our stories" deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. No matter what happens to the fate of the show, please know that the work you and Jessica Leccia have done has touched the lives of so many and will undoubtedly be remembered and cherished long after the cameras have stopped rolling. Thanks for recognizing us as your fans it truly means a lot that you see us because sometimes at least for me I am not always seen, at least in my family. I have a great family and great friends, however I am not sure of who I am,its not that I am gay, because I don't believer that I am, but again I do not know, its just I feel a lot like Olivia where the person I always thought I was is vanishing right in front of me, and the person I am becoming is someone I don't know is my family can except and this is a harsh reality. I am an advocate of gay rights, I think dehumanizing someone due to who they love is crude and ridiculous, however my family is not so open minded, and the word fag or homo is used as nonchalantly as "and" and this really hurts me, yet I never speak up for what is right. Yet is it worth stuffing down something your not sure of just to fit into the puzzle your family has mapped out? I find that the Otalia story is allowing me to see both sides, the ups and the downs, the obstacles that are very real in a not so real setting. I am only 20 years old and am struggling with who I am, but the character you play is one I give props to for being able to at least express herself no matter how long it takes, the situation is real and it different and I think it shows you should be able to be who you want to be, and that there really is no "normal" and that everyone faces obstacles in their life and the fear of that should not hold you back, and for that and for alone I think it would be a shame to see a great story (and show) end at such a time when this is needed. As for me I am a huge fan of the work you do, I think your funny and beautiful and you really do an excellent job of expressing real emotions and the unknown of embarking on a journey to an unknown. Thank for the love you show us in you in your blogs, and I'm am now following you on twitter so I guess that makes me a low-grade stalker just kidding!! But keep up the good work. As a 56-year-old gay woman I have also seen far too many lesbian characters portrayed in ridiculous, superficial ways. Both Ms Leccia's and your portrayal of women coming to terms with their feelings of love for one another is absolutely marvellous. The looks, the touches, the yearnings, the frustrations, the concerns for your children's welfare and fears of rejection from friends,family and church are all there. It is a true gift you both bring to the screen as artists. I can't begin to articulate just how spot on your performances are ... many thanks.

I have had the honour of watching you grow and mature as an actress for many years on TV. I feel that your portrayal of Olivia is your best ... so far. LOL

Now, if I may, I have two questions for you.

1. In your chosen profession as an actor is there a project or role that you would like to "sink your creative teeth" into?

2. Working in daytime TV appears to be gruelling. It is not like making a movie. You are "on" five days a week for just about 52 weeks a year.

thank you for your generous accessibility. i think the way you engage with fans goes a long way to humanize actors. i wonder sometimes if the public's vision of actors as untouchable unrelatable celebrities diminishes the art of acting. i know that following this story and you on the many sites associated with it, has made me so grateful that you are telling this story. your candor in your interviews. your passion for your work. i'm 35 and came out four years ago. god, is it tough. and you're not making it look easy...which is a good thing : ) i appreciate your dedication to telling the story authentically. my gratitude extends to your co-stars and writers, of course. the topic of coming out a little later in life is something i'm studying in graduate school. i'm thrilled that we get to see such a carefully crafted portrayal of it.

now, about my gross underestimation of the quality of your work. 'damn good job' doesn't cut it. as a kid, i watched films from the '30s and '40s and noticed every gesture and gaze, and i would wonder if something was unintentional or planned. i marvelled at how something so small could convey so much. you, my dear, are the queen. you appear to be so in the moment. the apparent simplicity of that is powerful : ) you're a joy to watch. thanks for sharing your talent with all of us.

A big THANK YOU to you, actually. It's certainly been a joy to watch what you've created on that show. It actually feels weird to have such a different story out there, especially in a climate that feels like the focus has shifted from societally meaningful conversation to culturally divisive pandering. And it is a different kind of story. It takes feelings and fears and individual lives into account in a way that I have never seen on television. What a thoughtful and inspiring post you have written. I have been watching GL on and off for 24 years and I guess I took for granted that it would always be there for me when I needed it. As I read your entry I am getting ready to go to work as a pediatric nurse, a job in which I have literally saved people's lives. And what is my reward? Staffing cuts and longer hours. GL has no doubt literally saved people's lives too. Watching a flawed character like Olivia Spencer go thru her life, making some bad decisions while also showing the human potential to persevere has no doubt given some viewers the courage to face issues in their own lives. Seeing Olivia now with Natalia, we are beginning to see a true heroine emerge.

We have some crazy standards of worth in our society. GL is a valuable program worth saving, not a show that should be a casualty of budget cuts. It is not just entertainment. When a soap is well-written and superbly acted it can change people's lives. Obviously from the fan correspondence you receive you are feeling that.
Some things in life are worth fighting for..I will keep fighting to make nursing a profession where I continue to have the resources to save lives. And I along with so many others will keep fighting to keep quality human dramas like GL on the air and society changing stories like Otalia's in the forefront.
I hope to see you continue Olivia's journey but rest assured you have made plenty of fans whose support will be yours no matter what you do in the future.

Wow..Thank you Crystal.I try not to think about the Gl not continuing, cause I feel deep inside that it will move on to another network. I've never followed an actress before you. Crystal~ I just want to compliment you on doing such an awesome job developing the characted of Olivia in to a beautiful, caring, thoughtful and loving individual! Olivia definitely hasn't had an easy road to travel on but you've finally found that one true love with Natalia...you found someone that will love you unconditionally, no questions asked, and won't do anything to hurt you! She loves you for who you are; you don't have to try to change to make her happy, you can just be yourself!!
The Otalia storyline really is easy for me to relate to as I have been involved with a few guys in past years. Then I found out I have MS at the age of 18 in '93 and found this wonderful woman (who happens to be a CNA in a nursing home) who has been my partner for the last eight years! She helps take care of me when the MS gets bad and I need help and leaves me alone when she knows that is what I need at that particular time. Watching you and Natalia on GL has been so inspiring and you really are a GODDESS, Crystal!! I'd love to meet you someday or even just get to talk to you somehow. I'd also love to get an autographed pic of Otalia if at all possible. Keep up the flawless, inspiring and amazing work that you do when you play Olivia, Crystal!! She's a better person now cuz of Natalia and the feelings she has for her. You two have such great chemistry!! I watched you on DOOL when you were Dr. Carly Manning and got buried alive but this Otalia storyline is the best one I've ever seen...what a real Love story it is! Take care of yourself and family! All I can say is wow! This storyline has been truly inspirational to say the least. The slow burn and character development has been nothing but genius. The writing has been phenomenal, nothing like I have seen on daytime TV. I have been so despondent at previous ‘gay’ storylines on TV and film depicted in a sensationalised way.

The stand out thing I have noticed regarding this storyline is that your acting has gone into a different stratosphere (you have been brilliant forever), but the sheer rawness, subtle phrasing, naturalistic reactions and realism is something to behold. The graveyard confession is a casing point; I have never seen anything so REAL AND COMING FROM THE HEART in my life. It was gut wrenching and played out like we the viewers were being voyeurs in a private conversation. Another stand out scene was the mirror scene in the bridal shop, OMG! So much was said with no words, you were breathtaking (I just need to breath………sigh). Your looks said everything without uttering a word; I have never watched a scene so brilliant in my life! Without sounding like a fan girl, your acting screamed OSCAR! I’ve seen lesser acting win Oscars and it makes me think you are nothing but a true Goddess!

I must confess that I was never much of a daytime soaps fan; really, daytime "anything" but my partner of 8 years said you've got to watch this show, it has a great storyline unfolding. As I'm sure you know, when you're married you have a tendency to placate the other so I did just that having no idea I would become instantly drawn to your character (at times down right addicted to your storyline). Watching the relationship unfold on screen is like falling in love all over again and you (and Jessica) do it so well that you forget gender while you're watching... BUT when you reflect on what you just watched it is amazing because I just know that people watching this have a light bulb moment, the moment when they realize wow, love can't be limited to what we think we know and think we should do/be. It is because of you that there is one more person in the world that won't even think twice when they see my family because my sexual orientation is just another adjective to describe me rather than define me. Kudos to the writers for handling this storyline so well and giving it the time it needed to mature.

I can't thank you enough for caring about the impact you are making; for investing so much of yourself into the story. Again, I thank you.

hmjmsf~ made an important point in saying that sexual orientation is a description,it is not the defining aspect of a person's life. That is one of the most important things the Otalia storyline has stressed,and Olivia and Natalia have reflected.

My grandmother has watched GL for well over 55yers! She has been to eery baeuer BBQ, seen families grow, characters (and actors die) and loved, and lived and learned along with GL. It is no surprise to me, thatit would be my grandmother at 79 years old calling me up to ask if I was still watching GL (which I was)! She then screamed at me, if you are not, YOU NEED TO GET WITH OTALIA!!! This story has transcened labels, and boundries, and thoughts on who you can love abd about what loev is. It speaks voulmes to me, that my grandma @ 79 is so moved and affected and suporting of this show of what love is. She has always felt that all Olivia really needed was someone to truly love her and see her for who she is. My grandma finally believes she has this, in Natalia.
She has loved you Crystal, as Olivia since the day you came on! She loved to hate you with the best of them, and always liked that tough girl! Your portrayal has given her and I so many years of enhoyment. Your interaction with your fans has given her so much happiness, especially now with the news of this show she's watched for so lon is going off the air!. I thank you for making, me and my grandma so many of your other fans so happy! My grandma simply sees this as tale of "bad" girl who just needs to be loved! She wants you two "kids" Nat & Olivia to be happy! And, happy we are because of your portrayal and of your love and true respect for your fans. Where you are, we will follow. Hey Crystal- I used to watch you on Days, and have just recently started watching Guiding Light. There is something about your characters that draws me in, and I'm guessing it's just simply.. you. :-) You really bring them to life! I have watched all the backstory of Otalia, and I absolutely love Olivia- so vulnerable even in her whackiest moments. Only a great actor could accomplish that.. then add a great story line and we can't take our eyes off the screen. I love every person in the Otalia story- it wouldn't be what it is without every one of them! (but you and Jessica are my favorites... shhh, don't tell.)

I've always loved the bad girl type character, because they don't fit in the frame of what

is usually expected from a woman. Olivia sure is one of the best character I've seen, and I

have one HUGE regret : I discovered GL only 2 months ago (I know, it sucks!). Which means

I've missed 10 years of Olivia, and worse, 10 years of your acting. When I see what you do

with Otalia, I can't help but being thrilled, amazed and deeply moved by your performance.

Crystal, the Otalia storyline, played expertly by both of you, has made GL the most relevant example of a real LGBT relationship.I applaud all at GL for this. I have been watching for 30 years.GL is the only soap I watch. It feels like a part of me will be missing when the show ends. I have loved you since the day you showed up in San Cristobel. You are my favorite character on the show. Olivia, complete with all her messy problems, still keeping it real. This is the first time she seems this human, touchable and easy to relate to. I am in Canada, where LGBT issues aren't percieved of as such a scary thing like in the States. I am truly having a blast everytime I get a representative at the P & G switchboard that is willing to talk. They are the ones that make me keep calling every day (I will admit it is more than 1 time every day LOL). We are finding out who watches the show and who doesn't. You know thay don't when they ask you what your favorite storyline is and you say Otalia and they don't know who it is.

Keep up the fantastic job you are doing and I will continue my efforts to save the light.

This is my first time to reach out to an actor, I've never even written a fan letter but you have inspired me. My days are filled now with great story and acting. (youtube makes it possible to watch a lot) I saw you come on the scene as Dr. Carly Manning on Days, (I quit NBC when they canceled Another World) and then your beginning on GL as Olivia. I haven't always liked the character but I've always liked you playing the character. I said a couple of years ago that I really wish they would write a true love for Olivia and well I'm just gobsmacked with how they went about that. I love it love it love it! I'm very sorry that the show will end in Sept. and I just wanted you to know how much I have loved watching you over the years. I'm what's called a shut in due to diaability and the soaps have made that easier to take but when you came along they became a joy. I will miss you and guiding light terribly much.

your beauty and grace has touched my very soul every time that i watch you onscreen as well as off the screen. i am always looking into the eyes of an angel, so perfect in every way. i cannot believe that you felt at one point in your life that you were talentless and unattractive. you certainly have come a long way from that, and it shows with each and every single performance.i myself have felt that way about myself, never being the girl who got the guy but rather the one who was left to the sidelines. beauty should not represented on the outside but rather from within, it is the soul of the person that projects that strength and is able to go out and make it out there in life.my heart is overfilled with joy, this storyline has in many ways made me realize that i needed to be honest with my true emotions. i have struggled with feeling rejected by others, not being able to move forward in life, without taking some sort of risk. i have lived in silence,afraid to show any signs of affection for anyone, trying to convince myself that i was unworthy of receiving love.i have kept a secret to myself for years, denying myself what i was missing out in life. for most of my life i had considered myself heterosexual, that is until recently when i started to watch the otalia storyline. i realized that i was hiding my sexuality,that i was truly attracted to women,and did not find men to be very appealing anymore. i had fallen so hard in love with this co-worker a few years before, and when i left the company, i never got the chance to tell her how i really felt about her. this storyline with otalia made me come out of the proverbial closet, and to embrace that love is love, no matter what you are in life. true love is always going to prevail in the end. you have brought out the true olivia spencer, and you should very proud of that accomplishment.many good wishes to you no matter what happens to the light, it will always stay lit and never dim out.

I have never really been a person that's been into soaps in a big way. A month ago if anyone mentioned Olivia Spencer, Otalia, Guiding Light or Chrystal Chappell, I wouldn't have had a clue about any of them, but now that has all changed. I came across a clip on youtube, just passing the time away, and the next thing I knew I had watched over 20 clips of the Otalia storyline. I can't count how many times I have watched it now. I adore Olivia, though she may have a tough exterior, she has a heart full of love and compassion. All she needed was for someone to show her, Natalia. It's amazing the bond they have for each other, it's something that is so precious, so deep. Something that can be difficult to find. The Otalia storyline can live up to the lyrics in the theme song to GL "Only love can change the world". I know I am not alone in thinking this, but it has. Chrystal, it has truly touched my life. Thankyou. You are such a gifted actress and one that I will admire whatever you do. Wishing you all the very best for your return to "DOOL".

When I read on the internet that you were going back to days of our lives I was surpirsed and disppointed but then I realized that it doesn't matter what soap opera you go to cause your still in amazing actress and even though I'm huge otalia fan and I wanted you and jessica to go to another together whats matters at the end of day is what you want and if its days of our lives then I'll support and follow you there. Crystal it is true that the love we share comes back to us if only we are open to receive such love. You are seeing and feeling so much love, appreciation & adoration because you have given this and more to us - your fan base. WoW... Ms. Chappell you just blew me away by saying that you and Ms. Leccia are going to give the fans a special treat on September 18th.

I worked as an Asst. Prod. Coord. and Crafty. I have seen very few Actors go out of their way... out of themselves to do the RIGHT thing concerning their fans.

To me it is more than just a gesture. People go out of their way to TRY to make people that are different feel small.

I am not Lesbian but I am a African-American non-Morman woman living in Utah (don't ask... long story)... many people have done little and huge things trying unsuccessfully to make be feel small and themselves feel better.

The Circumstances... seemed to say that your fan base are less than other people.

Just by what you and Ms. Leccia are giving us on the 18th of September you say we matter... that is huge.

I have never followed an Actor... I have never joined a fan club but I will join yours on payday... you have a fan for life.

The OTALIA storyline has truly touched my heart..emotionally and mentally. You are an amazing actress! I saw you on Days awhile back ago..and I just recently found the otalia clips on youtube,,thanks to Otaliafan. I had never seen a GL episode til this week, and I am all caught up on otalia storyline. As a 32 yr old hispanic christian, attracted to women, woman. I commend the storyline for being told with such beauty that can only be appreciated and truly understood with the heart. Well, okay, I can't believe I'm writing this...I've always thought Soap Operas were for stars who couldn't make it on prime time, but I am humbled. My friend sat me down and made me watch a couple Otalia clips on Youtube and I was floored by your performances. I have to now eat crow and retract most of my statemens about soap operas. You are one in a million actor and deserve many awards for your skills and ability to make a character come alive. It doesn't hurt that I love the story line too. I hope the writers go out with a bang on this one and not a whimper as they so often do with alternative storylines. Good luck with your new (returning) role. You are talented and will do great no matter where you are because you love what you do. Thanks for the great Otalia storyline. You give many hope that acceptance may be just around the corner.

Hi Crystal, I started tuning into GL after I caught an episode while in the Emergency room April 24th. I've since you tubed 100's of scenes between you and Natalia. I have enjoyed watching the relationship develop. It does drive me crazy when I think about the many romantic scenes between couples of the opposite sex on daytime compared to the limitations that are placed on romantic scenes between same sex couples. You do an excellent job however Crystal, even considering those limitations. The intensity you add to a scene because of your remarkable ability to communicate such love, desire and affection through your eyes, expressions and body language still satisfies. This amazing talent of yours has made me a forever fan. I know I will enjoy the final episodes of GL and I am sure finally seeing you and Natalia come together in a more physically romantic scene will be worth the wait. From my perspective you completely invest yourself and seem to really understand the experience of women being together in a romantic friendship.
Since you have put so much heart and commitment into this role and you have made it so convincing, are you yourself convinced that you could live that way (in a same sex relationship?)... if you had never met your husband and together created the family that you presently have...which I realize you cherish above anything.

Thank you for bringing such a unique and special storyline to fruition. You've been truly genuine and honest in your acting. It's made watching you and Jessica very enjoyable to watch as you & she breathe life into the words of Jill Lorie Hurst & Ellen Wheeler.

I think the reason I've felt compelled to watch the storyline is because in college I had female friends who previously had dated men, come out and date women. The one friend, I wasn't surprised about (in fact she's with a wonderful woman and I couldn't be happier for them) but the other friend I was, well to be truthful, shocked. The thing is, her friends (including me) never talked to her about it. We all just pretended it wasn't happening. To this day I'm not sure how we accomplished it. Of course it affected our tight-knit group of friends and not in a good way. We just were not as close after she came out. Watching the Otalia storyline has made me reflect on my actions, of what I should've done, could've done, etc. It's made me really miss my friendship with her and what we were to each other. I can only attribute it to ignorance on my part & fear that I wouldn't be able to accept my friend as who she is. She probably felt the same and probably needed her friends to understand, love & just support her. You never know what might happen in the future and there may come a time where we'll see each other and have an opportunity to talk things out. But until then, if & when it happens, I definitely have appreciated that by watching the Otalia storyline unfold, it's given me some clarity about my actions in the past and the friendship I lost.

the only good thing, for me ,about Soaps at this time. I've always liked Olivia but,I must admit, you've stunned/delighted me since Olivia/Natalia hooked up! I never thought that you wouldn't give your all in this love story, 'cause I'm not stupid, I just didn't know if I could trust GL to hold up their end of the bargin. as of today, I'm still not sure about TPTB. I'm confidant, however, that you and Jessica will continue to delight/astound me.

I really must offer you and Jessica my eternal Thanks for Finally giving me the couple I've always longed to see on my TV.
I was waiting, patiently I might add, since 1980 for a Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual or transgender couple without much sucsess.
by 2007,I had pretty much given up hope for American televison though I've had much better luck when it comes to shows not produced in the USA. yeah, I know, SON's Spencer/Ashley should count but, since I only have Cable, I didn't get to see them until this year on You Tube. so, thank you again for giving the world a couple who are no different than any other couple, with the exception of their sex.
