Emmy winner Crystal Chappell, who plays late-in-life-lesbian Olivia Spencer, has signed a deal to return to NBC’s Days of Our Lives as Carly Manning, a role she played to great popularity in the early ’90s (and, famously, got buried alive!). Chappell will start taping Days in September and hit the air in October. She gave TV Guide Magazine the exclusive lowdown on her surprising soap switch. This is hot, head-exploding news — it’s shocking and crazy and terrific! Who imagined this would be your next career move! Not me! I sure didn’t expect this at all but it’s very exciting. I was in L.A. a couple of weeks ago and had some meetings set up to discuss the future. [Days exec producer] Gary Tomlin called and asked if I’d be interested in coming back. We had lunch and, a week or so later, we had a deal. My kids have been asking me for a year, “When are we gonna move back to California?” So they’re very excited. It’s the show where their mommy and daddy met. [Chappell is married to Michael Sabatino, who played Carly’s husband, Lawrence Alamain.] So can daddy be far behind? Well, he’s coming with me to California. I mean, can he be far behind in Salem? Will we see an on-screen reunion with Carly and Lawrence? I have no idea. I have no idea about anything except that I’m going back. Gary and I didn’t talk story. Surely, Carly will make a beeline for her ex-lover Bo Brady [Peter Reckell]! It’s been 16 years since I played Carly and she is probably a very different person now. It’s an opportunity to go back and reestablish something, and at the same time reinvent it. I look back at Days as an experience that was lovely and romantic but also, because it was my first big job, the whole thing was overwhelming, actually. I’m older and wiser now and I’m looking forward to going back and giving it another shot. This happened so quickly that I’m reeling. My head and my heart are still with GL right now. I ’m still here! We’re shooting until the first week of August. The day the Days deal was finalized was the day of our last cast photo at GL, so it was kind of weird. And of course I couldn’t say anything about the new job. If there’s no future for GL — and at this point it doesn’t look good — the Otalia fans are going to have mixed feelings about this. Sure, they’ll be able to follow you to Days but I think a lot of them were hoping — hell, so was I — that you two might move over to As The World Turns. Your story brought a lot of new, non-soap viewers to GL, and there’s big value there. Hell, there oughta be a GL spinoff based around Otalia and really give the people what they want — it could be called The G-L Word. Admit it, it’s not a bad idea. It’s not a bad idea at all. I would gladly have done it. It was definitely something we were rallying for. I mentioned it to all the right people. But it was somebody else’s decision. It’s out of my hands. Otalia has certainly had too short of a life. I so love this storyline. In fact, I’m creating a Web series that has a similar energy to it — different from Otalia but similar. I believe there’s another kind of story to be told in this arena. People are ready and OK — well, for the most part — with watching a woman be who she is, and fall in love with another woman. I’ve gotten so much response from fans all over the world who are grateful that GL has told this story, because they haven’t seen it before with two women. Two men maybe, but not two women. I think we showed that there’s a real niche, a real market for this sort of thing. Clearly, the time has come.

Wow this is quite a surprise. But I can hardly blame Crystal for wanting to go back to California. I wish her and her family well. I will continue to follow her endeavors regardless of which show she's on

While my Otalia heart is very sad right now, I am happy for Crystal. I watched Days when she played Carly so I'm excited to see her returning to that role. Congrats to Crystal!

Days is where I first noticed CC. Wow, and I'm still a DAYS fan. Otalia is great but CC moves on. As long as she and her family are happy. That's all that matters. We are lucky fans. Days please don't F## this up.

This will be something that I will have to get used to because I have not watched Days of Our Lives in years.I never really watched it that much when Crystal was on before.I love her as Olivia.I guess I will have to get prepared because it is happening.I will follow her where ever she goes.Im a huge fan. I just have sort of a heavy heart concerning the fact that she will not be on Guiding Light after September.As she said and I have been thinking,it doesn't look good for them in getting picked up by another network though.We can only wish.But,it want be the same without Crystal Chappell anyway.I wish you the best Crystal.TammyF

The Otalia storyline has been a true gift to so many. It will be sad to see the storyline come to an end sooner than I would have hoped for, but it is in large part because of Crystal Chappell and Jill Lorie Hurst that it was created and brought to us in the first place. Crystal is certainly an ambassador for the LGBT community and for that I am truly grateful. This has been an exceptional storyline that has brought me some new wonderful friends, given me a wake up call on how far we still have yet to go, and has broken down some more doors and shattered some more windows for more of our many stories to be told. I'm thrilled for Crystal and certainly will follow her on Days of Our Lives and in all her career ventures.

I started watching Days in '87, but really didn't become invested until '90 when CC/Carly Manning appeared on my screen. In '93 when she left with Lawrence, I was so upset and stopped watching soaps. Turned on the TV last August and got sucked into GL and Otalia. I love love love the Otalia s/l and wanted to see it continue in any medium. However as that didn't appear to be in the cards, CC reprising her role as Dr. Carly Manning is the next best thing for me. The icing on the cake would be if Michael came back as Lawrence.

I am glad Crystal did what she felt she had to do for her career and her family. I will support all her future endeavors. I am very interested in the web series. I will follow her on Days. But, I have only watched her as Olivia, and I have watched Guiding Light my entire life, so it will be an adjustment. I am happy for her.

Wherever, whatever, whither thou goest...... I am a fan-for-life, I will enjoy whatever Crystal does. So although it is sad that Olivia Spencer will be gone, and this amazing Otalia story will come to an end, I wish Crystal all the success she can possibly imagine. And the same goes for Jessica Leccia...I am a fan-for-life of her too.

JUST added DAYS to my TiVo...gotta get started on getting caught up!! Crystal is an actress...the best! AND an incredibly gracious and genuine person. Many fell in love with Olivia first, then Otalia as a couple...some of us have been Crystal fans since DAYS way back when (geez I was 15?). I will follow Crystal to any show, network, cable, online where she performs. Hell, I hope she does some theater out here in Calidornia so I can watch her do her thang live!!! We have 3 months left of Otalia but rather than lose CC's talent at the possible loss of GL, we are guaranteed a continued viewing of such talent. CC is a smart woman. Dang, now I have that silly old song stuck in my head..."I will follow her...follow her wherever she may go. There isn't an ocean too deep, a mountain so high it can keep, keep me away" LOLOL, what a sap I am. Love you Crystal and will totally be stalking you on the 134!!! hee hee hee (ok, jk, don't be scurrred)

I am so happy to hear about the news that Crystal Chappell will return to Days of Our Lives as Carly Manning. I can not thank Crystal Chappell enough for the joy she has given me through the character of Olivia for the past ten years. The Otalia sotryline has touched me in more ways than I can imagine and has brought me some wonderful friendships because of it. I now look forward to becoming a Days of Our Lives fan and watching Crystal continue to shine. Crystal, thank you for being our Guiding Light and making our days so much brighter. I look forward to the next adventure you are going to take us on over at Days. It looks like DOOL will be my new favorite show!

so happy for crystal and her family. this is great news for us too as we will continue seeing her regularly. i loved the character of carly and hope she and bo reunite. well, if michael comes back too, then i would like to see carly and lawrence togther at first. i have such a soft spot for carly/bo though and hope we get another rooftop dance!
